Lucy's butterflies

Pictures of a new painting are up in the gallery... Lucy’s butterflies! This one sort of snuck in... did not post the creation of this as it went because this one was different. My big sis and my bro in law have a new home for their family, and asked me to do a little something for Lucy’s new bedroom. Lucy is my four year old niece, who now has her own bedroom for the first time since her little brother came along. The walls were a little sparse... the theme was purple (her favorite color), and butterflies... and my sis gave me two blank 24” square canvases, “Can you paint something cute for Lucy’s bedroom?”

Buh! Awesome, fun challenge because it was so open... a bit daunting for the same reason!

Now, I love Lucy! I know it has been said before, but, well, this is different. This lucy is our Lucy. I have been babysitting her once a week during the school year (my sis is a teacher) since she was six months old. I’m a bit attached.

I started painting a cutesy, fun, girlie painting of random butterflies flying around, with the help of my husband and a good friend of ours. Totally fun... but not right. She loves Auntie B and Uncle Caleb, and I wanted to give her a real painting... hopefully something she would love well beyond the age of four. Lucky for me, I got some color inspiration from a picture a friend posted on facebook, and my brain quickly put together what I wanted to do! Hooray! Thankfully my collaborators we cool with me whiting out what we had done, and starting fresh (thanks, guys).

The final result is the first collaboration that my husband and I have done together (other than our little sketch game.... will have to post those >>). I think we make a pretty good team! Hopefully this piece captures some of the freedom, whimsy and fun of childhood... or at least reminds us of those feelings. I’m super happy with the way it turned out! More importantly, the owner loves it too ;)
